MABAS (Mutual Aid Box Alarm System) is a statewide mutual aid response system. MABAS provides speed of response of emergency resources to stricken communities when emergencies occur. When Disaster Declarations happen, MABAS provides sustained system response on top of standard mutual aid occurrences. In the State of Illinois since the late 1960’s, the Mutual Alarm Box Alarm System includes in its membership approximately 1,175 of the 1,246 of Illinois’ Departments. MABAS is organized into 69 Divisions. Geographically the Illinois MABAS serves from Lake Michigan to the border with Iowa and south almost into Kentucky. MABAS Divisions from Wisconsin also respond to Illinois. Major Urban areas such as St. Louis, Milwaukee and Chicago are also MABAS member agencies.
In Illinois there are 102 Counties where MABAS is present.
To give you an idea of size, nearly 38,000 firefighters!
There are over 1600 fire stations, 1300 ambulances, 500 ladder trucks, 1000 water tenders and a reserve of more than 1000 additional emergency vehicles. Another interesting statistic is there are over 2375 engine companies.
MABAS has special teams for hazardous materials with over 40 teams in Illinois.
MABAS has 15 underwater rescue teams, 39 technical rescue teams and urban search and rescue teams.
Next time you see one of our first responders be it on duty or at your local grocery store or church, be sure to thank them for all they do for you.
We here at SERVPRO of Kankakee County salute you.
